Getting Ready to Move

Whether you are buying or selling a house, the stress doesn’t end after closing. Now is the time you’ll have to pack up your belongings and move. Without proper organization and planning, this can be a very scattered and hectic experience. Here are seven helpful tips to make your move easier and combat the stress of moving day.

Get a Head Start

Packing the contents of your house will seem like a daunting task. To manage it, get a headstart by packing a few boxes each day in the weeks leading up to the move. When you finally know the moving date, beginning the process in earnest won’t seem as intimidating.

Packing Essential Items

There are items that you are going to want immediately after you move to your new place. Make your move easier by packing them in a clear container or storing them in a bag the night before the big day. That way, you’ll have what you need within reach and you won’t have to go searching for it.

Protect Your Belongings

Be sure to have plenty of newspapers and bubble wrap on hand to protect fragile items. You can also stuff boxes with dish towels and clothing. This way your dishes will stay safe, and you’ll be packing two things at once.

Label the Boxes to Make Your Move Easier

When labeling your boxes, write the contents of the box and which room the boxes belong in at the new house. You’ll stay organized and moving day will go that much quicker.

Eat Leftovers

You won’t want to move perishable food, especially if you are moving far away. Stop going to the grocery store two weeks before the move so you don’t add unnecessary, perishable food items to your home.

Make Your Move Easier by Asking for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family to help out. It makes the moving day run smoother when more people are there to support you. If you were planning on getting rid of any furnishings or other belongings, offer them to your helpers first. They will appreciate free stuff and likely take it off your hands on moving day.

Update Your Address in Advance

Update your address with the Post Office two weeks before moving. Make a list of all of your online subscriptions or memberships, and make sure to update your address on each site. Also, don’t forget to update your address on your credit and debit cards.

With these seven moving tips, you’ll be in good shape for that day. Your moving day will go much smoother, and that stress will be under control.
